Fair week

I vowed I wasn't going to complain about the weather on my blog this summer, but it may or may not have been the reasoned I climbed into a hole and disappeared last week.

But the heat is lifting a wee bit just in time for our 4-H county fair to begin this week.

You can tell my brain is full when I start pasting sheets of lists and schedules to the kitchen refrigerator. There are papers listing everyone's fair entries--cookies, paintings, photographs, cakes. A schedule for the week--what day we take animals in, when sheep get weighed, when we have volunteer duties, when the sheep show starts, and with plenty of room for more "to-dos" as they stack up.

My kitchen is a massive explosion of fair picnic food, cookie-baking, show clothes and tonight's defrosting dinner.

The girls and I just came in from a

June 24. To camp

We're down a kid.

Early this morning Emma went off for a week of 4-H camp. Her third year, but her first year at *intermediate* camp. Big stuff. More freedom. Choosing her "workshops and crafts". A dance. I'll be curious to hear which of the rumors that have been swirling through these girls' minds, flopped on beds late at night, are true. And which are the talk of junior campers longing for the big time.

She leaves me with hugs, but totally ready to go. I comfort myself by saying it's a sign that I've done a good job. Her ability to hug and walk away with confidence and excitement. No nerves. No worries. I tell myself her ability to "be fine" without me, has nothing whatsoever to do with me.

Dan dropped her off this year. And then called me on his way to work. She forgot a few things. Could we drop them off before lunch.

So we pile in the car, swing through the store for the forgotten things. Tuck a few extra dollars for the snack bar, some postage stamps, that thing she forgot, in a polka dotted envelope and scribble her name on the front.

We arrive on the strike of noon. It's quiet. So we just leave her things inside.

As we're pulling away from the mess hall, we hear singing in the woods. Top of their lungs, loud as they can singing. I pull out slowly, hoping we'll get one quick glimpse of her before leaving. She rounds the corner, sees our car and waves. Her sisters point and shout that they've spotted her in the crowd, like she's some fox we're lucky enough to catch a glimpse of as it slips across the road. I roll down my window and she runs over. Her hair in fancy braids. Braids that weren't done by me. She looks beautiful. And old.

I tell her where we left her things and she races off to get back in line with her tribe.

And we slip out the gravel road.

And Birdy cries. And doesn't understand why we've left her. And wants to go back. Wants to be with her.

And I just nod my head.

Alt Summit NYC-bound

People! I totally flaked out on my daily posting. I was doing so well. But apparently June has had other plans for me. Between getting ready for the Alt Summit in NYC, my third flat tire in two weeks (!), sending a little one off to "grandma camp", and general summer farm craziness, I'm feeling totally swamped.

I want to catch up, but today, I've got a bit of butterflies in my stomach as I head out by train this afternoon to New York City for the Alt Design Summit at Martha Stewart Headquarters. I've been up to my ears in "what to wear", business cards, and "is there something in the fridge for dinner while I'm gone".

Emily + I had planned to go to Alt together. But after....

June 5. My best tip for going to the zoo with kids

So I thought I had this whole zoo-trip thing figured out. We were capitalizing on a rare break in the heat and humidity to make a trip to the zoo. We had the "homeschooler advantage" meaning most schools were winding down, but too late in the year to be taking big field trips to places like...the zoo.

We waited until later in the morning to hit the road, knowing that if we left too soon we would hit traffic in both Baltimore and DC. And the trip was smooth sailing. But I should have known, when

June 4. Zoo bound

This will be a short post but I'm committed to keeping up with my daily posts! And I am actually posting this from my phone, in the car. No, I'm not driving.

We are having a rare two days of beautiful cool days here in Maryland. So we are taking advantage of both the weather and the fact that schools are still in session to slip off to the National zoo for the day.

Birdy says she wants to see scary tigers, Mary says she won't leave without seeing flamingos and Emma says giraffes are a required stop. Elizabeth thankfully has no stringent requests.

More soon! Happy day.
